OSCAR NODS, GROUNDHOGS, AND A CLASSIC

February 2nd, 2010 by Steve Goddard

HOLY COW - WHAT A BUSY DAY

Where to start?  How about the Oscar nominations.  They were announced this morning with 10 nominations for Best Picture instead of the usual 5, and for a shocker, Jeff Bridges highly acclaimed “Crazy Heart” wasn’t on the list!   Take a look and see what was.

(Do we really need to feed James Cameron’s ego any more?!!)

IF YOU MISSED THE GRAMMYS LAST NIGHT…..

February 1st, 2010 by Steve Goddard

FOR ME, IT WAS  (FOR THE MOST PART) FLASH OVER MUSICAL SUBSTANCE

Two highlights:  Michael Jackson’s chilren accepting a Grammy for their late father (amazing how Prince sounds like his dad when he speaks).

It was also great to see some of the artists and parings, but a bored-sounding Elton John being over shadowed by a physically over aggressive Lady Ga Ga (and vocally average at best), set the musical tone.

And when Taylor Swift went flat vocally (WAY flat) with Stevie Nicks in a duet of “Rhiannon”, I lost any hope of musical redemption.  It was great to see Leon Russell (another Oklahoma boy) - at least we know he’s alive.   Roberta Flacks duet on “Where Is The Love” was at least a half tone flat.  Was there ANY doubt Bon Jovi was going to play “You Give Love A Bad Name” as the peoples choice request!  He was good, but only played half the song!

Redemption did come toward the end of the show with a fitting tribute to Les Paul when Jeff Beck re-created, what I consider a huge step toward rock & roll,  Les’s classic arrangement of “How High The Moon”.  It was the one musical moment for me worth hearing.  And even though Imelda May’s vocals on the the song were mostly pre-recorded, it was the musical highlight for me.  Not to mention Jeff Bridges introduction whic contained the best line of the night:

“The late great Les Paul is much more than just a familiar name on some really cool Gibson guitars”.

Amen to that.

(Sorry for the quality)

GRAMMY’S SUN. ON CBS 5/KURT WARNER

January 29th, 2010 by Steve Goddard

AND YOU’RE GONNA NEED A PAIR OF 3D GLASSES FOR THE MICHAEL JACKSON SEGMENT - THEY’RE FREE AT TARGET

I’m not the world’s biggest Michael Jackson fan.  But after seeing “This Is It” in the theatre last November, and plowing through the extras on the just released DVD this last Tuesday, I do have a different perspective of him than before I saw the film.  To watch the creative process was amazing, and  one thing I learned from it, was that he was totally involved and in control of every aspect of the show, which would have ben ground breaking.  It’s not easy to stage a show with elements that haven’t been thought of or created yet, but this show would have pulled it off.  There’s enough tantalizing evidence in the movie to support that statement.  During the Grammy’s this Sunday night, a 5 minute tribute to Michael will be shown in 3-D.  You don’t need a 3-D television to see it that way, but you do need a pair of 3-D glasses that you can pick up (for free) at any Target store.

And if you want to catch up on who’s nominated for what, Check out this video.

KURT WARNER - TO QUOTE THE CLASH “SHOULD I STAY OR SHOULD I GO”- THE DECISION WAS ANNOUNCED TODAY

He’s been wrestling with that question for some time now.  Today  made the announcement that after 12 years in the N.F.L. he is retiring.  The decision didn’t come lightly .  To quote Kurt:

“For the last couple of years God has been telling me it’s getting closer”.

One aspect of making his decision was “bring able to walk away without the game or your body dictating it to you.”

As far as his future is concerned?

“Minestry will be a part of it.”

“I want to work to continue to impact people’s lives”.

“I would like football to be a part of it. I enjoy the game”.

With the members of his family on stage with him, he summed things up pretty well for me with the statement “These eight people are my priority”.

Amen and God bless, Kurt.  You’re a class act.

PETE TOWNSEND SUPER BOWL WARNING

January 28th, 2010 by Steve Goddard

HE WAS PLACED ON A SEX OFFENDERS LIST IN ENGLAND

This happened in 2003 after he was arrested in a pedophilia sting in the UK.  He wasn’t convicted, but he was placed on the list at that time.

This all comes to light again because The Who is playing the halftime show at Super Bowl XLIV a week from Sunday.  Several child abuse organizations have sent postcards to about 1500 households and schools around the area in Miami near sun Life Stadium.  Townsend was supposed to be taken off the list after 5 years, but it’s still unclear whether that has happened yet.

Here’s the advisory being distributed.

PERNELL ROBERTS DIED SUNDAY

January 26th, 2010 by Steve Goddard

BETTER KNOWN AS “ADAM” ON BONANZA AND TRAPPER JOHN M.D.

Pernell Roberts, the last surviving member of Bonanza’s cast, has died of cancer, the Los Angeles Times reported. He was 81.

He died Sunday at his Malibu home, wife Eleanor Criswell told the paper.

He played the eldest son of the ranching family headed by Ben Cartwright (Lorne Greene). But he left the top-rated series because he didn’t like the development — or lack thereof — of his character.

Add Bonanza full episodes to your TVGuide.com DVR

“They told me the four characters (Greene, himself and Dan Blocker and Michael Landon as his brothers) would be carefully defined and the scripts carefully prepared,” he told The Associated Press in 1964. “None of it ever happened.”

It bothered him that a man in his 30s had to be so deferential to his widowed father. Roberts fulfilled his six-year contract, then left the series in 1965.

Bonanza, which started in 1959, continued until 1973, making it second to Gunsmoke as the longest-running Western on network television. (Blocker died in 1972, Greene in 1987 and Landon in 1991.)

After appearing for years as guests on other series, Roberts eventually got another TV series: Trapper John, M.D. in 1979. His title role was a much older version of the M*A*S*H character played by Wayne Rogers.
