2/9/64 - THE BEATLES ON THE ED SULLIVAN SHOW

HERE’S MY TAKE ON IT

You can read about it in books and you can replay the video over and over, but if you weren’t there, you can’t get the full impact of The Beatles first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show.  Considering the program went off the air in 1970, videos of the show are hard to put in perspective in today’s world of “everything accessable on demand’.  There were no ipods, no tivo, no internet, no cd’s, no mp3’s, no vcr’s! FIRST THINGS FIRST -  THE BEST “COMMERCIAL”WAS NOT A COMMERCIAL

It was a promo for David Letterman.  Not many things catch me off guard, but this one really came out of left field for me.  I was seeing it…but just couldn’t wrap my brain around it.  Absolutly brilliant!  (apparently it was Daves idea, but how did they keep it a secret!)  Have a look.

BEFORE YESTERDAY HAD YOU EVER HEARD OF ROBERT TURNER?

Let me refresh your memory, the Miller High Life Ad that featured small businesses around the country featured Bizarre Guitar founder and owner Robert Turner.  Robert is well known around the valley to those who play guitar and drums in the valley, and it was great to see a local guy in the mix.  I have a call in to him today, but something tells me I’m not the only one.  We’ll see how it turns out.  Way to go Bob!  All the best from us!

LOTS GOING ON TODAY RINGO - EAGLES - AND JAMES DEAN

Ringo gets his star (no pun intende3d) on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Eagles tickets go on sale today (and you can vote on the top 5 at 5 for your Eagles favorite), and today would have been James Dean’s 79th birthday.  How kool was he?  THe movie may be dated, but he’s still iconically kool…

I WAS READING AN ARTICLE TONIGHT ABOUT THE HALF TIME SHOW

Whoever wrote it thought The Who were “dull”.  According to the article’s author (who will remain nameless) “The Who is not relevant to current times unlike other performers such as Bruce Springsteen and even Paul McCartney”.

“The Who werw not awful, just uninspiring.  However, the lights were splendid”.

“I am hoping next year we may hope to see someone who is relevant to the new generation”.

Those were his words, not mine.  What do you think?  Please email me at steve.goddard@cbsradio.com

I REALLY want to hear from you on this one.

TO A MULTI-MILLIONAIRE TEEN AGER

I was watching an old Lee Van Cleef movie on the Western Channel the other night, and kept thnking the kid in the movie looked familiar.  Sure enough, it was Leif Garrett - teenage heartthron of the mid-late 70’s.  This week Leif surfaced, again, on (another) posession charge, a by product of no one saying no at a time when he needed it most.  Sad to see such a deep and consistant fall that continues to this day.

Here’s a clip from happier times.
