MY #1 FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIE OF ALL TIME

I didn’t see “It’s A Wonderful Life” until the mid-80’s.  It’s not a movie I grew up with.  I was working at KZZP (the real one)and a salesman named Bob (sorry I can’t remember his last name) kept telling me about the greatest movie he’s ever seen. Being a “beginning movie buff”, I was anxious to track it down - it wasn’t hard.  At the time “It’s A Wonderful Life” had fallen into the public domain, which meant any TV station could run the movie for free - and they did - all the time.  Last week we watched it again for the umpteenth time, and though we know just about every line of dialogue, it still makes an impact.  And yeah, I still git wet eyes when brother Harry makes it home just in time to toast his brother George…..Auld Lang Syne…cue the tear ducts…..It ranks as my #1 Christmas movie - and certainly one of my top 5 all time favorite movies period!  It was Jimmy Stewart’s first movie after returning home from the war.  It was the first movie for Frank Capra’s Liberty Films……and did you know the snow scenes of Bedford Falls  were filmed in 1946 during one of the hottest summers they’d ever experienced!!!!!  How many movies made so long ago can still make you think and pull at your emotions at the same time?  Not many, and for me “It’s A Wonderful Life” does it better than any other.

#2 IN THE COUNTDOWN OF MY FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIES

This is a true story:  Ricky Guy was the son of Bill Guy, who owned the newspaper in my hometown of Haskell, Oklahoma.  Ricky along with every guy in our class, wanted a BB gun, and we all got the same story from our moms, “you’ll shoot your eye out”.  To make a long story short, Ricky was the first one in our class to get a BB gun for Christmas.  After his family opened up all their presents, he took his brand new BB gun out into the yard where he put a target on a metal sign (you know where this is going), took aim, and promptly shot his eye out!  When he came back to school after the Christmas vacation, he had a big silver patch over his eye which was attached to his face with white medical tape.  I remember it like it was yesterday.  Eventually some of my class mates did get Daisy Air Rifles, but I never did.  And now you know why my second favorite Christmas movie is so special to me…it’s like a real slice of my own life!

#3 IN THE COUNTDOWN OF MY 5 FAVORITE CHRISTMAS MOVIES

This has to be one of the most unusual trailers ever - doesn’t really sell the fact that its a Christmas movie.  Really doesn’t even tell you anything about the film itself. Great shots of the old back lot at 20th Century Fox - and of some of the movie stars of the time.  Don’t fall for the re-make - the original is still the best!

What are YOUR favorite Christmas movies?  Email me at  Steve.Goddard@cbsradio.com
