Petula Clark had a beautiful song called “The 31st of June” - today is as close as we’ll get to that!  Hard to believe the 4th of July is this Friday!  Time is just zipping along.  As I begin my 3rd week with KOOL, here’s a group of newscasts the anchors and reporters would just as soon forget.  Hey - it’s good for a laugh!

Debated for a long time whether to get one - but now that I’m with KOOL, it made perfect sense.  So after about 20 years of wavering back and forth, I did it…may I present……….

Every Friday, I’ll post a KOOL KLIP for ya.  For years I remembered The Chantays playing “Pipeline” on the Lawrence Welk Show.  Everybody thought I was crazy.  For all non-believers, here’s that performance from May 18, 1963!  A-one and uh-two!

When I’ve heard every song worth hearing!  There’s always something I haven’t heard that a friend will turn me on to.  Gwen Foster has always had a good ear for country, and she & I are always sharing music.  I have friends all across the country with interests in different kinds of music.  Torey Malatia lives in Chicago and although we haven’t talked in some time, he was and is a great influence in my interest in classical music.  John Hermes in San Diego turned my on to a lot of surf instrumental stuff, and my wife Janey filled in a lot of top 40 things I missed being in the central part of the USA. (She remembered “Kick That Little Foot Sally” which was played a lot on KRIZ!  I’d never heard it until this year!)  I’m always happy to share music with people who want to listen, and I love it when folks do the same to me.  I’d sure love to hear about some of your  “forgotten favorites”.  So email me sometime and tell me about them - I’ll share it on my web blog.

So getting back to the answer to my original heading:  not anytime soon…thank goodness!

What a funny guy George Carlin was - first time I saw him was on the old Ed Sullivan show, with his short hair and skinny dark tie.  Wonderful W-H-I-N-O and Al Sleet the hippy-dippy weatherman made me bust a gut - still does!  And he continued to evolve throughout his 50 year career making us laugh and think!  Here’s a clip from a 1972 Tonight Show with the late Flip Wilson…..still making us laugh!

HOW I SPENT MY SATURDAY

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

Bo’s in Glendale is a favorite spot for me - he always has a lot of funky stuff - and records!  I’ve never had enough time to go through the lp’s anf 45’s, so Saturday I spent the whole day there.  Didn’t make it to the albums, but I did get through the singles, and brought about 280 of them home with me for a good cleaning and archiving.  (I’m always looking for more if you have any!) More in my photo gallery later this week.

I MAY MAKE CAMELBACK JACK CRY WITH THIS!

Friday, June 20th, 2008

kae-ronny-swinging-drums-r.mp3He and I were talking yesterday (Thursday) and he asked me about a song his brother Joe remembered hearing on KIMN in Denver in the early 60’s - said nobody he mentioned it to had ever heard of it.  Jack wasn’t even sure the song was for real. Joe didn’t know the artist, but he did recall the title: an instrumental called “Drums Fell Off A Cliff”.  I’d never heard of it but it aroused my curiosity, so after just a little research here’s what I discovered -

Jack the record is for real.  It was the follow up to a song titled “Swinging Drums” by Ronny Kae, who later would run a very successful retail music business in Denver called Drum City.  Both songs were released on Band Box Records, a local Denver label.  Ronny passed away in 1993 and his two sons now run the business.  I haven’t found a copy of Drums Fell Off A Cliff , but here’s the single that preceeded it.  The search will continue and I will track down a copy.  Until then, at least we know it existed and a little of the story behind it!
